Concessions, Concessions, Concessions

My name is Daniel. I was an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea, and am now a writer who has
published four books including South Korea: Our Story by Daniel Nardini.
Why has North Korea suddenly gotten nasty to the idea of a summit
between it and the United States in Singapore? We can only speculate, but I believe that it is all
about concessions. What exactly was discussed between Mike Pompeo and North Korean officials
is not exactly known, but I can break it down into three categories: 1. Human rights; 2. Having
both U.S. and United Nations’ officials in any and all parts of North Korea to make sure that any
denuclearization carried out is total and irreversible; and 3. making sure that the Libya model for
complete denuclearization is followed. What the North Korean side seems to want is: 1. No
concessions on human rights; and 2. economic and resource concessions before they agree to
give up any nuclear weapons. The key word is concessions. North Korea wants free goodies and
the complete lifting of sanctions before they give up any nuclear weapons. That goes on the
premise that they will give up their nuclear weapons at all. The United States and United Nations
wants North Korea to comply with ALL demands made by both the U.S. government and the
International Atomic Energy Agency before North Korea can receive anything. Will the summit
take place? Your guess is as good as mine, but both sides want concessions from the other
which one or both may not make at all. Or the summit might just happen even though nothing
is agreed to at all. But there are three facts we must keep in mind that so far North Korea is
NOT serious about wanting peace. First, it has not withdrawn its massive military might from
the Demilitarized Zone. Second, it has not given up its chemical and biological weapons
programs (Libya did that). Finally, it still imprisons hundreds of thousands of its own people
in virtual death camps. So I ask, what has changed in North Korea besides its propaganda?!
